How to Know When to Repair or Replace Your Furnace

- 8:50 am - April 22nd, 2019

The heating season is behind us, so it’s a good time to ask yourself just how well your furnace performed this past winter. If you’re looking back and thinking it could’ve done a better job at keeping you warm, the next question you need to ask yourself is should you repair it or replace it? We can help you decide!

Here are some pointers for determining if your furnace needs to be replaced completely, or if a simple repair would due:

Repair Your Furnace if…

  • It’s less than 12 years old
  • It had weak or low airflow
  • It’s labeled with an 87% AFUE or higher
  • It still produces a blue burner flame

Replace Your Furnace if…

  • It’s more than 13 years old
  • It has a broken heat exchanger or control module
  • It’s labeled with a 56% AFUE or lower
  • It produces a yellow burner flame

In addition to those listed above, a few other things that might indicate you need to upgrade your furnace include:

  • Frequent repairs
  • Strange noises or smells
  • Dry and dusty air
  • Heating bill increases
  • Temperature swings
  • Cold spots in your home
