From Rig to Tank: How Your Oil or Propane Gets to You
Have you ever wondered how your heating oil or propane gets to your home?
The process begins at an oil rig! Here is the official trip heating oil makes – with the end result keeping you warm and cozy all throughout the winter months.
Oil Rig
Heating oil and propane are made from crude oil, which is brought out from the ground by drilling oil rigs in oil fields. These fields can be either offshore or on land. After the crude oil is taken from the ground, it is then sent to the next place – a refinery.
Refinery
Crude oil itself cannot be used as a fuel; instead, it must be refined into chemicals that eventually will be part of other products, or into actual products. What products are made from the crude oil depends on the market at that particular time. The refinery is the point at which crude oil becomes heating oil or propane.
Terminal
After itis processed at the refinery, heating oil and propane travel to a distribution terminal by ship, barge, tank truck, train, or pipeline. These terminals provide temporary storage for refined crude oil products which will be distributed to bulk plants that are near end users.
Bulk Plant
Also known as wholesalers, independent marketers own and operate bulk plants, redistributing heating oil and propane to local dealers. In our case, we own several bulk storage facilities, so you can always be assured that there’s an ample supply of fuel at all times.
